Home Box Fiber + gigakraft gaming 300 - latency is too high

Question

Good afternoon!

I have installed Home Box Fiber (Docsis 3.1) router in my apartment (Vienna, Austria). I subscribed to gigakraft gaming 300.

I did a test and found that latency is too high.

Magenta Home Box Fiber (Wired Macbook connected 1Gbit/s Ethernet)

mpmost@iMax-MB-Pro16 ~ % traceroute wien.gv.at

traceroute to wien.gv.at (217.149.229.10), 64 hops max, 52 byte packets

Free in building Internet (Wireless Macbook connected, 5Ghz, 802.11ax)

With a free in a building WiFi I have a latency near 3ms and with Home Box Fiber + gaming tariff I have a latency 9ms.

Already next hop to my router introduces most of the latency. I guess that probably my router is connected not to Docsis 3.1

equipment in my building or a port is configured not properly.

Any ideas?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Hi Roman,

Most of the latency is introduced on a first hop (which includes Docsis segment):

mpmost@iMax-MB-Pro16 ~ % traceroute -a -I www.google.com

traceroute to www.google.com (142.251.36.196), 64 hops max, 72 byte packets

1  [AS0] 192.168.0.1 (192.168.0.1)  2.547 ms  1.269 ms  0.976 ms <<<<<<<<< My router ~ 1ms

2  [AS0] at-vie03c-rt01.as8412.net (217.25.120.4)  11.741 ms  12.193 ms  9.843 ms <<<<<<<<<<<< Magenta's first hop >  10ms

3  [AS8412] at-vie03c-rc01.as8412.net (217.25.122.252)  8.400 ms  14.932 ms  9.607 ms

4  [AS8412] at-vie03c-ri01.as8412.net (217.25.123.7)  8.796 ms  14.056 ms  8.522 ms

5  * * *

6  [AS15169] 172.253.78.209 (172.253.78.209)  15.033 ms  15.421 ms  15.762 ms

7  [AS15169] 142.251.68.119 (142.251.68.119)  13.729 ms  13.669 ms  13.535 ms

8  [AS15169] muc12s12-in-f4.1e100.net (142.251.36.196)  14.903 ms  13.777 ms  14.372 ms

Speedtest is OK with down/up link speed.. But latency is measured as 8ms.

I guess my router is connected to Magenta's in a building equipment not capable of Docsis 3.1 or the

port is not properly configured.

Thank you for your reply!

Hi Roman,

I finally reached English speaking customer service representative. He by my request contacted layer 2 support engineer.

Docsis 3.1 is confirmed for my link. Unfortunately it's Docsis 3.1 pure setup without a latency optimization. Because of that an average 10ms round trip latency is what can be achieved. To get a lower latency, Low Latency Docsis 3.1 (LLD)  should be implemented.

did you manage to solve this problem with Magenta Support?

I would like to reduce my latency as well, on gigakraft gaming 300 with FritzBox 6660

latency to first HOP in network is 11-17ms

google search "Low Latency Docsis 3.1 (LLD)":

Low Latency DOCSIS is added to the DOCSIS 3.1 specification to handle this problem. It will keep the round trip time around 1 millisecond (for specific services), even under heavy load.
